Karauli

Daang Vikas Sansatha (DVS) is a local level NGO which is working for the poorest of the poor and more predominantly with mining labour communities since last 10 years. Five years ago, DVS discovered several widow headed villages where the young population was wiped out as a result of being involved in mining of Red Sand Stone for their survival. The state of Rajasthan being the leading state in natural mineral excavation in India, according to estimates of the civil society organizations, there are approximate 7-10 lakhs people suffering from Silicosis and other respiratory infections.

DVS has been involved in detecting and getting them diagnosed for Silicosis disease so that they can make claim for compensation from the Government as it is a notifiable disease eligible for compensation. So far, DVS has facilitated in claiming compensation to the tune of 4 Crores 30 Lakhs Rupees. Due to DVS efforts poor have benefitted immensely. Organization is not only promoting safe mining amongst the mines labour but it is also working to promote alternate livelihood opportunities so that young people can move away from unsafe mining activities. Above all, district administration has yet not constituted a Pneumoconiosis Board in the district for certifying people for their Silicosis status. Therefore, DVS facilitates in taking the affected persons to state level Pneumoconiosis Board.
